What do you see on the card?
A horned, bat-winged figure is perched on a black pedestal, an inverted pentagram on its forehead. It raises its right hand and holds an inverted, flaming torch in its left. A man and a woman stand chained to the pedestal, with small horns and tails. The chains are loose — they could lift them off at any time.
- The loose chain — attachment that is a choice, not a compulsion.
- The inverted pentagram — matter ruling over spirit.
- The downturned torch — desire that burns instead of giving light.
- The black pedestal — the material world we cling to.
- The horns and tails — stay too long, and you become like what holds you.
The story of the card
After the forest, the Wanderer came to a bustling market square. Lights, music, laughter, rich tables and beautiful things surrounded him. A strange man stepped up and offered him everything he could ever want.
"Stay," he said with a smile. "Here you can have everything. Wealth, love, success. You don't need to wander any further."
The Wanderer felt the pull. He was tired, and it would have been so easy to put down his burdens. The man held out a golden chain. It was beautiful, but the Wanderer noticed that those who had already accepted one wore the same. They were laughing, yet they stood in one place.
The man said quietly: "This isn't a prison, just a little attachment. You can take it off anytime."
The Wanderer understood: the chain is not force, it is a choice. Excess and unmeasured desire can easily hold you captive, but freedom is always in your hands. He took a deep breath, took hold of the chain, then let it go.
Real strength lies in being able to say no to what holds you back.
UprightThe Devil Meaning
Attachment, temptation, dependence. When the Devil appears upright, something holds you more tightly than you would like — a habit, a relationship, a desire or a fear.
Waite gives the card "violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality" — adding: "that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil". The modern reading's message: the chain is not force but choice — and your freedom is always with you.
ReversedThe Devil Reversed
Reversed, the Devil is a card of release: you recognize the chain and take it off — letting go of a bad habit or relationship.
It can also show that you are facing your shadow and taking your power back. This is one of the Devil's most freeing messages. (Waite's own reversed list is darker: "evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness".)
The Devil in Love, Work and Life
Love
Strong attraction, passion — but watch where it turns into dependence or games. Reversed: walking away from a toxic relationship.
Work & money
A situation that is tempting financially but binding emotionally — ask yourself what it costs. Reversed: breaking free from a bad job or from debt.
Spiritual path
After the harmony of Temperance, the Devil brings the test: real strength lies in being able to say no to what holds you back.
